We feel like it’s time. Time to clear up any confusion there may be about this ambiguous term… elopement.

What the heck is an elopement? And why is everyone talking about it?

The term elopement has changed significantly over the last few years. Ten years ago an elopement may have looked like two people making a spontaneous decision to hastily wed at the courthouse; not including any loved ones, lacking meaningful details important to their story as a couple, and considered a rebellious act against society's expectations, rather than a personal decision made by the couple to honor their own desires.

Sadly, during that time a lot of shame was placed on those who eloped. Their choice to commit fully to one another was often covered up by the guilt of not doing things “properly.”

Since then, elopements have intentionally been shifted into a new light!

Now, when you hear the term elopement, there is no longer a negative connotation associated with it. Couples and wedding-industry professionals have worked diligently to educate others on the value elopements serve and to view eloping as an intimate decision to honor a couple and their unique story.

So what does an elopement look like today?

  1. Values first. An elopement is an intimate event that is dedicated specifically to honoring and celebrating a wild, unique and adventurous couple who is known for holding their values above all else. This couple is especially self-aware and knows what serves them; they choose to honor those things above the societal norms that are placed on them.

  2. Limited Guest List. They know that their day doesn't have to be big and flashy to be amazing and impactful. They value intimacy and connection and will only surround themselves with those they share a deep and meaningful connection with on their special day. They don’t feel an obligation to anyone but themselves, knowing their wedding day should serve their desires and intentionally tell their story.

  3. Story-Oriented. They desire to emphasize their unique story and know that is what makes their love beautiful and unique, they want their story to shine through on their elopement day because it is what led them to that special moment.

  4. Value in Mother Nature. This couple values nature and wants to incorporate it into their day somehow, whether it be through organic and natural details, celebrating outdoors, or valuing quality over quantity and being environmentally-conscious in their decision making process.

Above all else, an elopement is unconventional and shows immense courage by the couple to honor their love and commitment above the expectations of their peers.

Your day is your own, and if you want to say “I do” overlooking a 100-foot waterfall with only your love or with a few close loved ones, then you are totally empowered to do that here at Wildly!
