Intimate Mountain Wedding at an Airbnb in Breckenridge, CO | Kate + Alex

When Kate and Alex reached out to us in the midst of a global pandemic to plan their intimate mountain wedding in three months time, we couldn’t wait to start dreaming up some magic for them. In spite of COVID-19, we knew that this brazen couple deserved a day that reflected their values and artfully expressed their story.

We fell in love with Kate and Alex’s unapologetic personalities. Their zest overflowed into their day so wonderfully, and they made the process of planning so much fun every step of the way.

Originally Kate and Alex planned a large scale wedding in Kentucky. Once news broke of lockdowns and event restrictions, they wasted no time cancelling. Was this difficult for them?

Not really.

The values they cherished weren’t reflected in a large traditional wedding. They wanted something laid back, a day that had ease and flow— no stress. They wanted to enjoy private moments to themselves and give energy to traditions that served them and felt right. They wanted their closest family members to witness their day. Most importantly, they wanted to have a damn good time.

Though COVID-19 has taken a lot from every one of us, one thing it has given us is the ability to assess what is truly important. This held true for kate and alex.

Just before their first look, we presented Kate with a surprise book of memories and letters from her friends that we had secretly planned with her maid of honor. Her maid of honor even wrote Alex a letter with a “stamp of approval” to wed her best friend!

The couple had their first look on a trail just a few yards from the Airbnb. In Breckenridge, any way you look leads to an epic view— we really couldn’t go wrong with choosing a spot for this special moment.

Their ceremony was held on the back deck of their Airbnb, which overlooked Breckenridge and an epic view of the Rocky mountains. Kate’s cousin officiated the ceremony, sharing inside jokes and stories, and bringing tears to Kate and guests.

Ryan Hutchens, their live guitarist, played “Where Is My Mind” by The Pixies for their ceremony. Later that evening, we had a copy of The Pixies record for guests to sign as a token from their day. The crisp, sunny October day was perfect for the warm love Kate and Alex shared.

Kate and Alex chose an epic day to get married— National Champagne day! Though the couple’s closest friends weren’t able to be at their intimate wedding, they made sure to make the couple feel so celebrated throughout the day. Kate’s maid of honor shipped a bottle of the fanciest champagne (we’ve ever tasted) for them to pop open after their ceremony!

Ryan Hutchens played a cover of “The Bones” by Marren Morris for their first dance. The moment was tender and heartfelt— you could feel how solid the foundation of their relationship was built upon in those moments, echoing the lyrics of the song.

We set their dinner table with 12 place settings, drawing inspiration from the industrial nature of the Airbnb, Kate and Alex’s colorful personalities and the grounded elements of the surrounding landscape. Deep sienna and pink tones were brought in through the flowers, stemless wine glasses and napkins. A moss green, velvet runner grounded the tablescape down the center. Urban Canyon made sure that the fresh flowers in the floral elements were balanced with dry elements to tie to the fall season. Her floral arrangements truly brought the table to life.

Footers Catering served a 3-course, decadent meal to the couple and their guests. We brought in various flavors of Nothing Bundt Cakes (a favorite of the couples) for dessert. The evening came to a close with a buzz of laughter and stories floating from the dinner table! Kate had an outfit change and the couple took some funky portraits on the industrial staircase of the Airbnb.

As the sun set pink over the mountains, Kate and Alex wandered off to cuddle in their gigantic bed with a view of the mountains, and we cleaned the Airbnb spotless so that they could relax and soak in the rest of their weekend in Colorado! We couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for Kate and Alex as we drove away at the end of the evening.
