Spiritual, Mezcal-Inspired Wedding Editorial at Forest Garden Yurts | Alyssah + Jason

Ozarkian poets celebrate their love, long and slow, surrounded by budding Missouri forests. Jason and Alyssah began their day reading poetry in bed— set in a lofted room in the center of a yurt.

Our aim with all editorial shoots that involve a couple is to craft a design and experience centered on a story. We don’t take a Pinterest photo and say “Let’s recreate something like this.”

Instead, we develop a story with a plot, characteristics, hobbies and personalities. Sometimes we imagine the stories. Sometimes we draw them from real people.

For this editorial Jason and Alyssah were our muses. We sent them questionnaires and talked through their love story. Then we created based on what they shared. This made every interaction during the editorial real and un-staged.

Jason and Alyssah’s honest and intimate personalities and their story rooted in historical and spiritual dissection, connecting to their humanity and travel (both of the world and educationally), inspired the entire essence of this editorial. They pour over books; are constantly outdoors in their garden or among friends or flora, alike; backpacked together across Europe; and enjoyed many nights in Mexico (hence, the mezcal).

Floral and botanical elements were wild, natural and unruly. Design and décor elements were both remnant of weathered Spanish architecture and refined - adorned and exalted.

Jason and Alyssah dressed each other before eating their breakfast of coffee and donuts. Alyssah wore a gown that was form fitting, silk and vintage-inspired, evoking the feeling of timeless history. The coffee and donuts brought us back to the present moment.

A ceremony perfect for poets— vining greenery spilled out of the valley and depression of the yurt roof. The vines framed the altar area. Similar to ivy vines that grow on houses, the altar florals felt natural; almost as if they were already there. Small blooms sprung forth from the overgrowth adding a misty lightness to the green, vining base. The altar complimented and softened the contiguity between the architecture and the florals.

Jason and Alyssah danced under vining wisteria in a second yurt to one of their favorite Fleetwood Mac records. Perfectly quirky and upbeat!

After dancing they took shots of mezcal from handcrafted ceramic glasses. The bar was adorned with stacks of old books, bottles of mezcal, and a floral arrangement

Dinner was set in the woods and the food was of the woods. Each dish was centered around locally foraged vegetation. Jason prepared all the mezcal margaritas for his friends and wife.

Their two-tiered cake displayed edible flowers and tasted divine. Each aspect continued the beautifully layered history of Jason and Alyssah and hinted at their future experiences.
