Summer Camp Wedding at Moose Creek Ranch in Victor, ID | Madison & George
As the wedding industry leans more and more into promoting exorbitant spending, flashy content, and star-studded affairs, we are “quietly” planning weddings crafted with intentional investment, raw memories captured in time, and a guest list of people that feel most like home. Madison and George’s wedding weekend in Victor, Idaho was just that.
On Day One we tacked photos from the couple’s childhood and vintage postcards to a bulletin board. We handed each guest a camp newspaper, which held a scavenger hunt that guided them in asking questions like “Did you throw a magic eight ball at Maddie’s head?” or “Do you pee sitting down?” Throughout the weekend, we rang the camp bell to signal the start of activities like a group hike, horseback riding, a ping pong tournament, and a survival skills lesson. The planned, yet casual, activities transformed into huddles with giggles and whispers, sharing drinks, inside jokes, pups running between legs, easy laughter, and poking fun.
On Day Two we dined al fresco with wood-fired pizza and hand-scooped ice cream. We had a professional caller to guide guests in the art of square dancing. It was our best ice breaker yet. “I’ve never seen people smile this much at a welcome party,” a guest said.
Morning coffee and river dips and bonfires and collaging and stargazing and bike riding filled moments in between.
By Day Three an unshakeable connection had formed. At ceremony, the couple walked down the aisle to a string version of Send Me on My Way by Rusted Root (best known from the movie The Ice Age). The bride’s friend led guests in a meditation. Guests threw dried lavender from the mother of the bride’s garden as the couple receded down the aisle. Tomato candles graced the floral arrangement and menu at the bar, foreshadowing the dinner tables to come. As guests entered reception, they picked a vintage envelope with their name and table number printed on it. Within the envelope was a handwritten letter from the couple. A typewriter was stationed at a vintage letter desk for guests to write the couple letters in return. Tables overflowed with tomatoes and garlic sprouts, pops of red, and patterned plates. The meal was served family style— encouraging an interactive communion.
The design of their wedding weekend was inspired by the bride’s mother’s garden— an explosion of summer harvest; quiet days in the northeast, where the couple grew up; summer camp in the Tetons, which the groom attended in the summers throughout high school; the vintage characters and silhouettes of movies and ranches past. Our most important guide in planning was their values, which we set at the start of the planning process: adventure, humor, fun, thoughtfulness, family, authenticity, and meaning.
Halfway through their first dance, they invited all their guests to dance with them. “Home is wherever I’m with you” swirled around everyone.
At sunset they walked with horses— the sun refracted in a witch-like magic through the bride’s cape. Then they danced the night away with the most comfortable silliness we’d ever seen— fully embodied. Even square dancing moves are used on the dance floor.
The night ended around a bonfire, as the best camp nights do.
On Day Four at the goodbye brunch, tearful hugs were exchanged as guests headed home. Post-camp blues set in quickly. It was the feeling of being a kid again— the anticipation of traveling to a far off place grew for months and the arrival at camp morphed easily into forming bonds and memories that could only come from dedicated time together.
Those are the intangible moments that they will never forget, and our job was to craft the environment for those to naturally unfold. What an absolute honor it was to plan with Madison and George, our clients turned friends.
