Intimate, Colorful, Backyard Wedding With COVID Precaution Tips | Kylie + Austin

It was at her brother’s wedding in 2019 that Kylie introduced us to her then-boyfriend, Austin, and told us that we were going to plan her wedding.

We had so much fun working with Kylie to surprise her mom at her brother’s reception (she sang ‘Humble and Kind’ during the mother-son dance, and it was one of the most tender moments we’ve witnessed from a family at a wedding) that we hoped I really would get to work with her again.

Fast forward a few months and Kylie and Austin reached out to us to be part of their wedding! To say we were thrilled is an understatement.

We had a blast getting to know these two and developing the most brilliant, fun, and beautiful concepts for their day set for mid-November.

Then COVID hit…

We had been preparing for a wedding boasting of 250 guests, a 14-piece band from Memphis, epic late night snacks, and impressive hanging floral installations. But with a heartbreaking pandemic we agreed with this sweet couple that a party this large would be too risky.

After deliberating and sorting through new options, Kylie and Austin pivoted to a smaller celebration at her parents’ lake house. Family and the wedding party would gather at the end of August for a summer wedding!

Side note, we were thrilled with the date, because it was 2 weeks before Celia’s baby boy was due, which meant the whole team could be there!

We joyfully jumped in to help finalize the gorgeous details and flow of the intimate party.

Even though the guest list was smaller, we still wanted to be vigilant about COVID. Kylie and her mom had amazing ideas about how to keep everyone safe. Here are a few things we did to keep everyone safe and healthy:

  • Masks and hand sanitizer (and bug spray) were provided for guests

  • We kept as many activities outdoors as possible (granted it rained for a bit of the day)

  • We spaced out guests and assigned tables according to family

  • Vendors wore masks the entire event (indoors and outdoors)

  • Plated dinners were served

  • Requested that anyone with any sort of symptom stay home

  • Rolled with any necessary changes in vendor and guest count!

A tender moment that connected with us, was when Austin’s uncle Leon (who officiated the wedding) shared a quote from Richard Rohr. It struck us so deeply because Celia and her husband named their son after Richard Rohr by giving him “Rohr” as his middle name. Sometimes we’re left speechless by how kindred spirits find each other.

The lake house has a beautiful pool that The Thicket filled with rose petals and Branson Party Rentals strung lights above.

As Kylie and Austin walked away as husband and wife, their best friend, Nate Fredrick, sang “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin. It was one of the sweet ways Austin surprised Kylie with on their day.

Kylie and Austin love martinis! Naturally, their cocktail hour included a gorgeous TINI TIME display and divine drinks from The Traveling Tin Co. We joyfully sipped the lavender lemon martinis with them.

The weeks leading up to the wedding we watched the weather. Some days it looked clear and others, we had impending rain. The week of the wedding decided to forgo the tent since we would have two spacious garages to work with, and they ended up working perfectly with the rain.

The weather forecast kept changing, and the morning of the wedding this amazing vendor team hustled to make Kylie and Austin’s day divine. We ended up moving the ceremony up an hour. We moved the cocktail hour to the pool side and dinner under the awning and in the garages (originally planned for the opposite locations). Sure enough, even though at 10 am we experienced a downpour (shout out to Ron and his team at The Thicket for setting up floral installations in a storm!) we had clear skies for the ceremony and cocktail hour. A little sun beam shone on Kylie and Austin as they had their first dance. Then rain returned at dinner time. Talk about flowing with the day, trusting our instincts, and team work!
