How to Create an Adventurous Wedding at Home | Unique Wedding Ideas | Adventurous Wedding Ideas

Traveling far and wide for your wedding or elopement may not be an option for you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t include adventure in your wedding at home. Whether you’re getting married in a local venue or your own backyard, here are some ways to make your day adventurous.

  1. Incorporate items you’ve collected throughout your travels. Souvenirs from your adventures together hold sentimental value to you as a couple; incorporating these is a personal way to add culture and adventure to your day, while also sharing a meaningful glimpse into your unique story with your guests.

  2. Have your photographer take you to a secluded, outdoor spot for your portraits. Take an hour to enjoy some time in nature and realign after one of the most exhilarating moments of your life. A short (or long, whatever you feel ready for) hike is a great way to connect one-on-one with your partner during the immense activity of a wedding day. Talk with your wedding planner about how to fit this into your timeline.

  3. Bring the outdoors inside. The key to an adventurous wedding is incorporating allllllllll of the natural elements.

    • Add plants, greenery and wild foliage to your decor. Utilize potted plants in your designs; from small plants on your tabletops to large plants as your ceremony backdrop. Take a hike a couple days before the wedding to forage natural and local foliage (watch out for poisonous plants). If you want local elements, but don’t have the energy or knowledge to do it yourself, ask your florist if they’re able to incorporate those on your behalf. This is also a way to create meaning, as it will reflect the area you live together.

    • Use inspiration from your favorite landscape for your color palette. Do you dream of tying the knot in the desert? Natural earth tones like rust, sand and sunset pink can make for a desert elopement right in your hometown. Find rugs, wall hangings, tablewares and linens in your color palette and voila, you’ve added adventure from a specific place to your day.

    • Utilize natural elements in your decor. Nature takes many forms and finding design items that are inspired by nature or are made from completely natural elements is a great way to bring the outdoors in. Substitute plastic furniture for hand-built wood furniture. Add design elements made from natural fibers, ceramic, paper— the list of materials goes on and on!

  4. Create experiences and interaction for you and your guests. Have a cocktail bar where the bartenders teach your guests how to make a drink themselves. Bring in vintage arcade games. Have a Polaroid station. Have a fishing station (yes, we actually incorporated this into a wedding by a river). Cater late night snacks from your favorite local restaurant. The list is endless; think about the special experiences you and your partner have had together and figure out how those could be incorporated into your wedding day.

  5. Cater food from a different culture. We firmly believe the best way to experience a new culture is through its food. Find a restaurant with a passion for a culture you connect with and allow them to transform your day with the aromas of a far away place.

  6. Elope before your wedding day. Many of our couples have secretly eloped in a special place before their “big day.” They wanted to have a party with all their friends and family, but still wanted that secluded, adventurous moment just the two of them. Head to your favorite place or a bucket list place around the world to officially tie the knot.

  7. Share photos or videos from your travels at your wedding. Share parts of your story that friends or family may not know about. Bring them closer to you during this show and tell!

  8. Instead of registering for lots of stuff, ask your guests to contribute to an adventure for the two of you. Maybe you’ve dreamed of honeymooning in Morocco. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to see the endless waterfalls that make up Iceland. Rather than receiving a bunch of possessions, ask your guests to contribute to creating more stories, memories and adventures.
